Karen went missing on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1997. At the time Karen was living in Eureka, Humbolt County, CA with her aunt, Annie Casper. She was originally from Orange County, CA. On the day Karen went missing she had rode in with her aunt to her aunt's shoe store located in the Bayshore Mall in the vicinity of the 3300 block of Braodway. About 2:45 pm she left her aunt's store to walk to her workplace at the Coastal Family Development Center about one mile away. When Karen was supposed to get off of work, her aunt went to go pick her up but found out that Karen had never made it to work. Karen was last seen walking towards West Sonoma Street shortly after she left her aunt's store. A witness(retired police officer) stated that Karen may have entered an unidentified light blue four-door 1976 to 1978 sedan, which was possibly a Ford Grenada, a Mercury Monarch, or a Nissan. The vehicle had California license plates and "Eureka" imprinted on the rear plate's frame. The driver of the car is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 60 to 70 years old, with balding light gray or sandy blonde hair. The unidentified man had green or gray eyes and a large-sized nose that appeared to have been previously broken. He had a small build and wore eyeglasses. The driver was wearing a long-sleeved button-down light blue shirt. The driver is wanted for questioning as a possible witness in Karen's case. The witness claimed that the car pulled across Broadway Street and nearly hit him before stopping for a girl matching Karen's description. charleyproject.org/case/karen-marie-mitchell

Robert Durst has been a person of interest in Karen's disappearance - I personally do not believe he is connected but many people think so. Robert Durst apparently visited Casper's store several times in March 1998, four months after Karen disappeared, and he resembles the sketch of the man wanted for questioning in Karen's case. His photo is posted with this case summary. Robert's first wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared from New York in 1982. Her case remains unsolved and Robert is considered the prime suspect, although he has never been charged in connection with her case. Robert was charged with the 2001 Texas homicide of Morris Black. He claimed he murdered Black in self-defense, and was acquitted in 2003. In 2015, he was charged with murder in the 2000 shooting death of Susan Berman. Investigators looked into the possibility that Robert was in the Eureka area at the time of Karen's disappearance, but he has never been charged with any involvement. They've ruled him out as a suspect in the 1997 disappearance of Kristen Modafferi from San Francisco, but he's being looked at in the 1971 disappearance of Lynne Schulze from Middlebury, Vermont. Robert and Kathleen owned a health food store in Middlebury at the time of Schulze's disappearance, and she visited it the day she went missing.

I have been looking at this case since day one. I personally do not believe Robert Durst is responsible for Karen Mitchell's disappearance.
I also don't know how the witness got so close to see the guy's eye color? That seems a little strange to me. And if the person driving was sitting in the car, how does the witness know if they were short or not? Maybe the driver was slouched down in the seat? Maybe he did not want to be seen? I don't know, but I personally would not rule out someone because they were tall or had a different eye color.
The article states this person might be a witness. That might be true, but maybe they are the one responsible for Karen's disappearance?
A lot of people got so involved in thinking Durst was responsible, I think they stopped looking for the person driving the car.

I was first interested in the case of Missing Karen Mitchell when she first went missing in November 1997. Karen Mitchell grabbed my interest. At that time she was not connected to any of the other missing persons there in Humbolt. . Every since I looked at the Karen Mitchell case after she first went missing, I have thought she might be connected to something else. I have always wondered if she was not connected to the Jane Doe found at Poison Lake (Lassen County). Here is the info on the Jane Doe found Poison Lake, Lassen County, CAwww.fbi.gov/wanted/seeking-info/lassen-county-ca-jane-doeAge Approximately 35 to 45 years Height Approximately 5'0" Sex Female Race White Details: On June 14, 1995, the skeletal remains of a female skull and small limb bones were discovered south of the Poison Lake area in Lassen County, California. The remains were located above ground at a logging site approximately 1.5 miles south of Highway 44. The date of the woman's death was determined to be between June of 1994 and March of 1995.

There also might be another girl missing that was up at Hoopa, CA. Hoopa is a rural town located entirely on the reservation of the Hupa. The federal designation of the area is the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. Hoopa is on the Trinity River, in Humbolt County, CA. Hoopa is about an hour to the northeast of Eureka, CA where Karen Mitchell went missing.
Also there were a bunch of missing in Redding CA at the time which is 125 miles away but a straight shot over the mountain from Eureka to the central valley of far northern cali (shasta county). I personally always suspected someone was running back and forth from Eureka to Redding area, and then from the Redding area to other areas, including Lassen County ca, East of Redding area. I don't KNOW this, but I have suspected it.

It's been awhile since I have looked at all of these cases and several others but the description of the car and sketch of the driver matches up with other areas where someone like this was in the areas of several other missing persons and unsolved murders. I can't even remember now where all they were at, but I should have notes on them in storage, that I will have to try to find. At one time, if I remember right this guy was also connected to a green pickup truck. I think those case were connected to the central valley area of central California, and a couple more in the Sierra Nevada. It's been clear back 20 years ago I was working on all of this, and some dates back probably 30 years ago or longer. This is why I think we have a sk involved in this case.
