Some people have suggested that Zodiac may have been involved in Satanism and have checked into a possible connection to the cult responsible for the Son of Sam murders. As far as I know there has never been a solid connection made. I never felt that this was something I wanted to spend time researching... until now.
If you know about the Son of Sam case, you are probably familiar with Untermyer park, where the 22 Disciples of Hell held rituals. Maybe the name Untermyer could be a link between the two cases. There was a man named Henry Untermyer that lived a block from the Paul Stine murder scene in San Francisco, Oct. 1969. It is probably a coincidence, but there could be something there.
EDIT: Well I really screwed the pooch on this one. Henry's last name was spelled slightly different, Untermeyer. But back in those days it was fairly common for people to change the spelling of their last names, so I'm still going to check this out just for the hell of it. And this thread should remain anyways, because there are several other angles we can look at to see if there is a connection between Zodiac and Son of Sam. Henry actually does resemble the known Zodiac composite, minus the glasses, as you can see in this link: cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=VEST19661006.2.52&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1
Henry Untermeyer was born January 9, 1915 in New York City. His name can be found in the '69-'70 San Francisco directory, at 3 Presidio Terrace, which you can Google and see that it was just a block west of where Paul Stine was murdered. Presidio Terrace is a street that goes around in a big circle and has some really nice homes, some of which are mansions. San Francisco's mayor at the time of the Stine murder, Joseph Alito, also lived in Presidio Terrace. Paul Stine was a cab driver that was shot and killed by a passenger in his cab. There was a similar murder of a cab driver in Oceanside in 1962 that had a lot of similarities to the Stine murder, where cabbie Ray Davis was killed and his body was dumped near the home of not only the current (at the time) mayor, but the former Oceanside mayor lived right across the street. Zodiac researchers, myself included, have been looking into that and have been trying to figure out if Ray Davis was an early Zodiac victim.
But back to the name Untermyer/Untermeyer.
The '69-'70 S.F. directory also has a listing for a B.T. Untermyer, or possibly just B. Untermyer (spelled like the Yonkers park, and different to that of Henry) living at 1168 Kearny St. I have not researched this name yet.
Henry Untermeyer was born Jan. 9, 1915, as I mentioned previously. He passed away December 5th, 1994 in Palm Springs, CA. (Riverside County..... Samuel Untermyer also died in Palm Springs). His father's name was Melville Untermeyer. Possible Zodiac connection there. In one of the Zodiac letters, the author references the "Melville Eats Blubber" button, shown here:
This, of course, was a reference to Herman Melville, but there could have been a hidden meaning behind it. Melville Untermeyer was a gem broker, poet, and critic in New York City that died in 1937, at the age of 58, by either jumping or falling from the window of his 10th floor apartment, which you can read about here: www.nytimes.com/1937/10/20/archives/gem-broker-killed-in-5th-ave-plunge-melville-untermeyer-58-retired.html
Interesting, eh? And, coincidentally, Herman Melville was a writer and poet from... yep, New York City.
Melville Untermeyer was in the jewelry business with his cousin, Louis Untermeyer. Louis was also a poet and was a close friend of Robert Frost. You can read all about him on his wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Untermeyer
Louis wrote a book (published in 1934), retelling several Gilbert & Sullivan operas, including the Mikado:
www.amazon.com/last-pirate-Gilbert-Sullivan-operas/dp/B00085I400
So now I have to figure out if Henry Untermeyer was related to Samuel J. Untermyer, whom Untermyer park is named after. I would bet that there is nothing to this, but we won't know unless the research is done.
I also want to research everyone that lived in Presidio Terrace in 1969, but I will probably post that information in the Zodiac section of the forum. If anyone is interested, here is a link to the thread about the Ray Davis murder: theslaughterhouse.freeforums.net/thread/466/davis-oceanside-cabbie-april-1962?page=1&scrollTo=2986
And I just started a thread on people from Presidio Terrace: theslaughterhouse.freeforums.net/thread/578/presidio-terrace-residents
What are the odds that an Untermeyer/Untermyer from New York would end up living just one block from a Zodiac murder?
