This has to be a hoax right? Interestingly enough is the fact that there was a string of hooker murders in New orleans during that time and there really was a black cop suspected so this caller may have been the real deal or maybe he just knew about it somehow and decided to play a prank on the Stern show

It's a hoax. Gotta be. The caller didn't sound like a serial killer and if we really was a killer, why did he stay on the line for so long? A real killer most likely would not have done that.
You're right, the murders were real. If I remember correct, I think there were a total of 26 prostitutes killed in and around New Orleans between 1991 and 1996. Yes, it is interesting that the caller mentioned that NOLA PD suspected one of their own, an officer named Victor Gant, but a white man from Ohio was also suspected and was convicted of one of the murders, maybe two. I don't recall the exact details. That was a guy named Russell Ellwood. Word around the interwebs is that Ellwood was the one that called the Stern show, but that is not true. Ellwood was in jail at the time. He was arrested in Florida about 2-3 weeks before the call was made and was in jail for 2-3 months on drug charges. Before the call to the Stern show, Ellwood had already been interrogated by the FBI twice, I think.
This is something I need to read up on again and refresh my memory. I always thought Ellwood had killed more that just two of those women. I'm pretty sure I remember reading years ago that he confessed to fellow inmates that he had killed some women in New Orleans. I do remember that he was cleared in at least one of the murders because he had proof that he was in Ohio or Florida, I believe. Maybe he had an accomplice? If so, maybe that person called the Stern show?
Another reason that I think the call is a hoax is that the caller claimed to have killed some victims with a hammer. I researched this case a long time ago and never found anything that stated that any of the victims were killed with a hammer.

Here is info I just found on the murder he was convicted of Cheryl Lewis was the victims name I'd say he did murder Cheryl but I dont know about any of the others The serial killer task force in New Orleans traveled to Florida to interview Ellwood on July 23, 1997 On August 4, 1997 he was arrested for purchasing cocaine from an undercover officer in Sebring, Florida and was incarcerated for 85 days So you are right that he was in jail when "Clay" called Howard Stern Show Ellwood was convicted of murdering Cheryl Lewis but there was no physical evidence. I still think he did it
