I was doing some research on Merchant Marines (in regards to Robert Tarbox's Zodiac Killer suspect) and stumbled across a Merchant Marine, Richard Calvin Zaleski, that went missing in 1963. The last time his family heard from him was Feb. 24, 1963 after he signed off of the SS Gaines Mill at Martinez, CA. Richard Calvin ZaleskiDOB: Nov. 22, 1925 Allegheny, PA Parents: Stephen and Mathelde (Campbell) Zaleski Spouse: None that I can find Children: None that I can find Siblings: Irvin Miles Zaleski and Lyda Bernice Zaleski Koshorek Known Addresses: 2026 13th Ave, Altoona, PA (his childhood home. His family still lived there in 1945 but Richard had moved to the east side of PA) Morton Ave and 9th St, Chester, PA (1945) Dallas, TX (1955) Don't know if this is the same guy or not. The age is just a little bit off. Richard would have been 19 at the time and not 21. Of course he could have lied to the police about his age I suppose: 1942 Altoona, PA yearbook photo courtesy of Seagull: Seagull also found that Richard's mother died in 1955 while in Hollidaysburg State Hospital. She committed suicide by "self strangulation, using a strip of muslin". Here is her death certificate: His mother's obituary states that Richard is living in Texas in 1955: Richard was drafted in 1948. The strange thing is that he was listed on military ships as far back as 1946: -1946 Richard C. Zaleski aboard the Albert E. Watts which departed from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela and arrived in New York City on Feb. 7. -1948 Richard C. Zaleski boarded the James H Couper at Santa Maria and arrived in Honolulu, HI on July 6th. He then went to Sasebo, Japan shortly after, and then to San Francisco (on the same ship) where he arrived on August 17. -1955 Richard C. Zaleski boards a ship called Gulfglow that left Las Piedras, Venezuela and arrived in New York City on Sept. 7, 1955. Later that year, Richard C. Zaleski is on a ship called Marine Leader that leaves Caripito, Venezuela and arrives at in New York City on Nov. 26. He is then on the Marine Leader the following month as it departs from Aruba and arrives in Bridgeport, CT on Dec. 21. -1956 Richard C. Zaleski boards a ship called the Tamalpais which departs from Aruba and arrives in Bridgeport, CT on Nov. 21, the day before his birthday. This may be Richard's father: I had a June 18, 1945 Altoona Tribune newspaper article about Richard's sister being bit by a dog, but the article is gone for some reason. Richard's brother, Irvin, joined the marines in 1944. Irvin and his son, Thomas, were known to be pretty good in archery and hunting. Irvin had another son, Irvin Jr., who went by the name of Skip, and a daughter named JoAnne. I was looking through a 1956 Erie, PA yearbook trying to find a photo of a Zodiac POI of mine, and I happened across a girl in the same grade as this POI. The girl's name was Audrey F. Zaleski. She did archery in school so she could possibly be related to Irvin and/or his kids. Irvin and his son won awards in archery. Here is Audrey's yearbook photo: I did have more info on Zaleski but seemed to have misplaced a lot of it.

Good finds! I think I looked into the Richard C. Zaleski in Massachusetts and found that it was not the same guy. I found nothing on him after his disappearance in 1963. I thought it was interesting that he went missing in Martinez, known Zodiac territory, and that he was a merchant marine. I updated the original post up top with more info on him.

Here is Richard's Father's Death Certificate. Looks like here remarried to a Verna. He died in 1960.. and Richard's mom was already dead... so I wonder where his brother was by the time Richard disappeared. Maybe there was no reason to go back there if they were all dead? From Verna's memorial page - Verna Zeleski is the 2nd wife of Richard's father, so she is his step-mother his father was already deceased in 1960 I can't tell if william is a zaleski or not, it appears that is what this might be saying, Edward is... and then Dona Jean and winifred might be maiden names zaleski if they are being listed under married names. If so then richard would have 2 step brothers and two step sisters. he MIGHT have went where they live? but where is his other brother Irvan? Here are some names and one is a zaleski, I need to find out if that is a son of hers and Stephen zaleski, who would be Richard's half brother. let me try to figure this out but here is the info www.findagrave.com/memorial/50770825Verna A. Zaleski, 69, of the Valley View Home died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 1985, in the home, after an extended illness. She was born Oct. 29, 1915, in Altoona, the daughter of Merrill and Ida Mae (Cashman) Robinson, and was twice married; first to Willian E. Shaner, then to Stephen Zaleski, who both preceded her in death. Surviving are seven children; Robert M. Shaner, Florence M. Wray, John H. Shaner and Sandra L. Beck of Altoona, William, Edward Zaleski of West Valley City, Utah; Dona Jean Ritz of Baltimore, MD, and Winifred H. Mapes of Roaring Spring; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers and sisters; David, Ruth Bulmen, Grace and Ralph of Altoona. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Broad Avenue. Zaleski - Services for Verna Zaleski of Valley View Home Inc., Broad Avenue, by Pastor Ray Stewart. Interment in Carson Valley Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc. A son, Charles Shaner, died July 26, 1982. First married to William Edward Shaner who was born July 7, 1915. Death and burial unknown.

In 1943, stephen and Mathelde are living at 2026 13th ave in Altonna PA Stephen is a brakeman. His death certificate said he worked for the railroad so I guess he is a brakeman for the railroad?
also living in this home at the time is Richard, working at LAB, and brother Irvin USA so I Irvin is in the army or what is USA?
Name: Richard Zaleski Residence Year: 1943 Street address: 2026 13th Av Residence Place: Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA Occupation: Laborer Publication Title: Altoona, Pennsylvania, City Directory, 1943

Looks like William, Edward, Dona and Winifred may all have been Verna and Stephen's children. That would be rather strange though considering that Stephen died in 1960. I didn't see when he and Verna were married, but Stephen's first wife, Richard's mother, died in 1955. That basically leaves a five year window 1955-1960 that Stephen and Verna could have had children together unless they were bumpin' uglies while Richard's mother was in the hospital, which I don;t know how long of a stay she had there.

Winifred H. Mapes was born around 1940 or 1941 I believe so she would not have been Stephen's daughter. This must be from Verna's first marriage.

I haven't seen that photo before! I did email Sam a few years ago and never got a reply. I was hoping to hear back from her to see if she could provide any additional information on Richard that might help figure out what happened to him. I think I tried sending her a text message as well.
In the photo, Richard is on the right and Irvin on the left.
