Cheri Josephine Bates (February 4, 1948 - October 30, 1966) was a freshman student at Riverside Community College who was murdered on the campus of the educational institution, on the day before Halloween, October 30, 1966. She was a graduate of Ramona High School, formerly a varsity cheerleader, and an honor student there. Bates' slaying has been linked to the Zodiac killer murders, which occurred in northern California in the late 1960s. An autopsy on Bates' body revealed that she had given quite a struggle to escape from her killer. A janitor found her body at approximately 6 a.m. She had been stabbed numerous times in the lungs, arms, throat, and face. Her corpse was lying sprawled face down on a dirt driveway, adjacent to a frame bungalow storage facility at the periphery of the campus quad. Bates was clothed in a print blouse and salmon colored capri pants. The clothes appeared undisturbed but were soaked in blood. Bates' lime green Volkswagen Beetle was parked one hundred yards away. Its ignition wiring had been pulled loose but the ignition key was in place. Three library books on the subject of United States government were lying on the auto's front seat. Police theorized Bates' murderer disabled her car and then waited for her to come back from the college library on the Sunday night. They believed he likely surprised her as she attempted to start her car. Bates' father, a machinist employed at the Corona, California Naval Ordnance Laboratory, filed a missing person report. He did so after one of Bates' girlfriends told him that Bates said she was going to the library that evening. Bates resided with her father at 4195 Via San Jose. Her mother lived in Riverside also, but was separated from the father. Bates had a brother who was serving in the United States Navy. Paul Avery, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, followed the Zodiac case from the outset. In 1970 he found communications more than a year old from the Riverside police, which indicated a resemblance to the Zodiac's handwriting style. By then Zodiac claimed fourteen victims although only five were attributed to him. It was hypothesized that the Zodiac killer may have been from Riverside and later moved to the San Francisco area. One of the clues was a set of lower case initials, r h, below a macabre poem which was scratched into a desk at Riverside Community College. This was found six months after Bates' murder. Riverside police noted a likeness between Bates' slaying and that of a young couple attacked at Lake Berryessa. Steve Hodel, in his book Most Evil, claims that his father, George Hodel, killed Bates. Hodel also claims that his father was the Black Dahlia killer, The Zodiac Killer and The Lipstick Killer, among others.

As we know, Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered on the night of October 30, 1966 near the Riverside City College library. The killer is believed to have tampered with Cheri Jo's car so that it wouldn't start and then approached her after she left the library. A janitor at RCC found this peom on the underside of a desktop that had been in storage.

"The Confession" The "confession letter" was mailed to police on Nov. 29, 1966, one day shy of the 1 month anniversary of Cheri Jo's murder.

RIP Cheri! 53 years ago today she was brutally murdered and it is unfortunate that the killer was never brought to justice.

There was also a girl attacked and stabbed at RCC in April 1965 and the guy was arrested. He got married in June 1965 IIRC so he probably wasn't in jail when Bates was murdered. I'll find that again and post it because right no I'm just going off of memory.
I don't remember the date of the article already being discussed in here but IIRC it was maybe a month after CJB's murder.

I read that cheri Jo Bates was at the library working on a PAPER for her class project. she then called her bank to see if she left it there because she didn't want to have start all over writing it again. So where did that paper go? and what was the subject matter? And was it ever found? I wonder if her killer picked up the project paper she was writing? _________________________ Shortly before Bates left her home, she phoned a co-worker at the Riverside National Bank, inquiring as to whether she had seen a term paper bibliography she (Bates) had misplaced. When her co-worker replied she had not, Bates replied: "Now I'll have to start all over on my note cards. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Cheri_Jo_Bates

I just now read - her bf ( Dennis Highland) had transferred to San Fran College.
Cheri had a boyfriend of two years, Dennis Highland.
He was also reportedly her fiancé. He had gone to RCC and then transferred to San Francisco State College to play football.
The weekend before her death, Cheri and Highland’s parents had visited him in San Francisco. Friends recall they were head over heels for each other.
I also read
Cheri was a very nice and giving and helpful person. I wonder if she were sympathetic for any of the "rights" groups? or was her boyfriend?
Her father? her brother?

Riverside, 1966 Cheri’s murder “was a loss of innocence,” says Judith Whitfield, a Riverside real estate agent and substitute teacher at Notre Dame High School. A year ahead of Cheri at Riverside’s Ramona High School, they had shared the same group of friends, says Whitfield, who was also enrolled at RCC in the fall of 1966. Even though they’d had many friends killed in the war in Vietnam, it was rare for teenagers in Riverside to know someone who had been murdered, she says.
She recalls going to Cheri’s funeral, then standing at the burial site at Crestlawn Cemetery and being overcome with emotion. “I kept thinking, ‘This can’t be real,’” she says. What kind of person would do this?
That’s the same question Robert “Bob” Michalka still asks. Like Whitfield, Michalka is a 1965 graduate of Ramona High. He was friends with Cheri and with her boyfriend, who had graduated in 1964 and went on to play football at San Francisco State. At Ramona, Cheri was a junior when Michalka was a senior, but they shared a German class. “We studied together over pronunciations in the language lab, and I also tutored her in math,” recalls Michalka, who was a student at RCC in 1966. He recalls arriving at the school the morning after Cheri was killed.
“I was parking on campus with a friend when we heard that a female had been killed the night before (Sunday) near the library. Once I got to the quadrangle, someone told me it was Cheri Bates. I was in shock,” he says. “We couldn’t imagine who would do this or why,” he adds.
Who Killed Cheri Jo Bates? Born in Nebraska on Feb. 4, 1948 to Joseph and Irene Bates, Cheri moved to Riverside with her family, which included her brother Michael, who was one year older, in 1959. They settled into a comfortable neighborhood in the center of town. By the time Cheri got to Ramona High, she had established herself as outgoing and popular. A cheerleader, she also enjoyed sports, playing the piano, and like most girls her age, spending time with friends.
_____________
So looking above, we see Cheri was pretty popular, had many friends, had friends who had died in the viet nam war, she was a cheerleader, she played piano, she took German in school, and her boyfriend had went on to san fran college and played football.
so what were her two friends(mentioned above) and her boyfriend connected to. Anything at all that someone would not like, which Cheri also might have been interested in? It's 1966 and there was so much going on with so many groups, maybe they were involved in something that seemed like nothing at all, but someone did not like it, and being they were popular it was well known.

Wasn't it rumored that Dennis Highland was friends or somehow knew Darlene Ferrin's ex-husband, Jim Phillips/Jim Crabtree? Again, I was away from the case for quite a while so I forget a lot of details such as this.

I mostly just worked on the codes and communications. but I have been looking at the victims and their connections for awhile now. I have been tearing apart connections to crabtree/phillips lately and all the names in Darlen Ferrin's address book. I'll be posting my findings on that soon. I don't know how much anyone already knows about that, but I certainly am finding some things that seem very interesting to me. I'll post it all on another thread soon. but... if cheri jo bates' bf is somehow connected jim crabtree/phillips, that would certainly be interesting. He's certainly got some strange ties all over

hmmm I don't know how to find out but we really need to find out who all these people knew and if they were sympathizers for any of the radical groups at the time. There was so much killing going on of radicals and their sympathizers. You really didn't even have to be involved in anything, just sympathizing with the causes sometimes got you killed.

My thoughts are that Darlene Ferrin was killed because sh was involved with bad people and knew too much Cheri Jo on the other hand I think was just some psycho had a crush on her and got rejected We know the radical groups were mostly made up of crazies, well those are the ones that were in the newspapers anyways but there were alot of normal everyday people that would be members too and you would never hear about them. The FBI had a list of member names for some of these groups but I dont think they were complete lists Pretty sure that they only had names of people in certain areas because those were the areas the FBI were focused on This probably is due to FBI infiltrating these groups Im sure thats how they obtained these lists
As far as any ties to Zodiac victims though I have no idea Havent really seen anything that would make me think so because most of the victims were so young other than Stine but its something to check out

I've been going through her address book and looking up everyone and seeing what and who they were all involved with. I'm slow at doing it though as I'm also working on all these ciphers and code. yes the radicals groups had some crazies haha... but yes, they certainly did have a lot of people affiliated with them who weren't as crazy. I don't believe the FBI has a total list of people who were involved in these groups. You are probably right that the FBI infiltrated people and also had people telling on each other every time they got busted ugh... back then if you even talked to your neighbor and they were in NCIC you immediately ended up in NCIC as an affiliate of whoever they were involved in. A lot of people caught a lot of jackets that they really did not deserve to have. And if you happened to be related to one of them or seen giving them a ride etc, you can bet you are in NCIC as one of their affiliates.

I'm still thinking about the school paper project Cheri was working on, how she called the bank to see if she might have left her papers there, as she obviously did not have them when she got to the college. I wonder if she went to the bank and went inside, if someone took them out of her car?
I also read that when the police were investigating they found two books on government in her car. This means absolutely nothing, but then again, to some weirdo, maybe it did mean something and so the person took her papers to see what she was writing about. We can't really know how killers' minds work. If her paper was even "slanted" in the least to the opposite side of this killer's thinking, that might have been all it took for him to hunt her down and kill her.
I still need to go through all her friends and anything else we can find about her and her friends to see if she was even remotely tied to anyone or anything to do with radical thinking; not that SHE was radical in any way, but someone she knew might have been, and she could have been seen hanging out with these people in other circumstances. It did not take much to be labeled as a radical in those days. All you hd to do is be seen with someone who was.

Cheri Jo Bates - Why Her? Is There Something We Don't Know?Just some thoughts... because there seems to maybe be some "under-the-surface" hint of something RADICAL going on in the Z case(or at least that is my thought) then I'm wondering if Cheri Jo Bates' father(Joseph C Bates) might have had something going on that caused the killing of Cheri? Maybe it really wasn't about Cheri personally? I have a couple of ideas here. theslaughterhouse.freeforums.net/thread/394/cheri-jo-bates-why

Looking at this photo of Cheri Jo Bates, from the Romona High Year book, I had a thought. Here she is with the R for Romona High... what if the RH on the decktop poem is for Ramona High I doubt it, but you never know. so thought I would just put this out here to think about.
